Beschrijving
Deventer, J.H. de Lange, 1805, 8vo., full parchment wrap-around cover with boards and a closure ribbon. With the date printed on the back. The edges of the book block show a stripe like decoration in blue. The parchment cover seems to have been decorated with red diagonal stripes, but in time the red has faded in the places where is was touched most. Interleaved copy filled with notes in pencil and ink and two drawings in pencil. Without pagenumbers. The parchment has some stains and signs of the obvious wear and tear. There are also two small slits in the parchment covering the front edge of the book. Maybe this was used to hold a pencil? There is some damage to the connection of the endpapers and the cover. In the front this shows as some tears, in the back the cover has come loose from the book block.
According to a pencil note in the front of the book, it belonged to; ‘de heer Cornelis Bakkers, makelaar te Schidam bij de Grote Kerk’. The notes throughout the almanac are in different hands. Some concern agreements about work offers (building a closet for instance) and sales or purchases (beer and trees), some are to-do lists or a list of provided services and some are diary entries. This one I found endearing: ‘(…) ik blijve daer om niet langer lieve mama en Mimie want ik verlang zeer om uw te omhelsen (…)’ (I won't stay any longer, dear mama and Mimie, because I long to embrace you). Below this entry in a different hand: ‘Versoeke ook vrinlelijk van soo haest mogelijk te rug te komen want Mimi en ik verlangen seer ook versoeke ons vrijdag te schrijven en den dag te bepalen adieu chere Therese je t'embrasse tendrement’ (Please return as quickly as possible, because Mimi and I long for you. Also, please write us on Friday to decide on a day. Adieu dear Therese I embrace you tenderly).
Some entries are dated (though most are not) and they range between 1802 (misspelling?) and 1830. Some names that are mentioned as customers or suppliers: Genderik Mensele, Birte Ven (…), Esmans, Marte Gerrits, Jan Sibbers, Daniel van der Sand, Willem Nisse, Wouter Robbers, Hermanus Vermeulen, Thijs van Kessel, heer Kraan, Hofman, Theodorus van den Bogert and Crämer. There is repeated mention of Nijmegen.
