‘Upstream & Downstream’. Couple of charming engravings with a couple in a rowing boat. In the first (Stroman – Upstream) the man is poling the skiff against the stream. A packet of food and wine `waits on the prow, while the woman is seated demurely with her hands folded. In the second (Stromab – Downstream), the couple is engaged with each other and most of the food has been consumed.
Two steel engravings on wove paper, sheet size c. 220 x 285 mm., image size 125 x 177 mm. Engraved by William French after paintings by J.J. Jenkins. The prints were printed and published by A.H. Payne in Leipzig and Dresden, around the middle of the 19th century.
William French (1815-1898) was an English (reproductive) printmaker and painter. He was active in Dresden, Neurenberg (1860) and Vienna.
Joseph John Jenkins (London 1811-1885) was an English illustrator, engraver and watercolorist.
Albert Henry Payne (London 1812 – 1902 Leipzig) was an English-born publisher, reprodcutive engraver and painter. From 1838 until the end of his life, he was active as publisher in Leipzig.
In reasonable condition. The sheets complete but quite foxed (mostly in the margins, but also in the image area).
