Bust-length portrait of Schiller, looking to the right. Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German polymath. He was a poet, playwright, historian, philosopher, physician and lawyer. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright.
Stipple engraving on wove paper, sheet size 175 x 125 mm., in matting. Engraved by Rosmäsler after the 1805 painting by Johann Friedrich August Tischbein.
The Rosmäsler family had three brothers who were engravers. Given the date of the painting after which this engraving was made, it cannot be Johann August, but we are not sure whether Johann Friedrich (c.1775-1858) or Johann Adolf (1770-1821) was responsible for this engraving.
Johann Friedrich August Tischbein (Maastricht 1750-1812 Heidelberg) was a German (court) painter and academy director. He was the son of Johann Valentin Tischbein, and a nephew of Johann Heinrich Tischbein (I).
In good condition, the sheet overall discoloured, and with a small stain just right of the oval portrait. In matting. With the collection mark of L.A. de Vries (not in Lugt) stamped on the verso.
