Portrait of Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg (1445-1510) was a priest. He is considered one of the greatest of the popular preachers of the 15th century. He was closely connected with the Renaissance humanists of Strasbourg.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 130 x 89 mm., carrier size 347 x 250 mm. Made by an anonymous engraver, copy in reverse of the portrait by Robert Boissard, made in 1597-1599. This copy was probably made in the early 17th century.
In good condition, cropped within platemark (with loss of top border) and attached to carrier sheet. Manuscript annotations in the lower margin of the carrier sheet. Some surface soiling in the image area. Two collection marks from the Rijksmuseum on the verso: Lugt 2233 (R.P.K.) and Lugt 789a. This last mark was used for duplicates that were sold in auction March 2-4, 1954 at Frederik Muller, Amsterdam.This mainly included material from the H. C. Valkema Blouw collection.
