In a wheel around the central logo of the Nederlandsche Exlibriskring (Dutch bookplate society) are the five steps in teh creation of a bookplate. This goes from the commission to inspiration, engraving, printing, and finally collecting.
Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 197 x 159 mm., platemark 114 x 114 mm. Made by Engelien Reitsma-Valença, signed in pencil lower right, and monogrammed and dated (1946) in the plate.
Engelien Reitsma-Valença (Amsterdam 1889 – 1981 Doorn) was a Dutch graphic artist in etching and lithography, painter and illustrator. She was taught by Carel Lodewijk Dake and Pieter Dupont, and designed many bookplates.
In excellent condition, a tiny dark stain in the top right margin corner. This is from the collection of Jeanne Bieruma Oosting, another painter and graphic artist from the Netherlands. Her collection mark (not in Lugt) is in the lower left corner of the print.
