Beschrijving
Antwerpen, Petrus Jouret, 1714, 12mo., full leather binding, ribbed spine, with goldtooling on the spine and on the edges of the binding, [38]+558 pp., beautiful dark leather binding with lovely goldtooled decorations that is hardly worn, but the binding seems to tight for the bookblock, so some signatures have shifted away from the spine, some waterstains. The book contains eleven full page engravings (anonymous, outside of the collation, including a frontispiece) and remarkably the edges of these pages are worn, as if they were looked up again and again. Possibly used for religious education. The engravings depict several stages of the Passion of Christ, including the betrayal by Judas, the bearing of the cross and the crucifixion. Woodcut vignette on titlepage, some decorative initials and head- and tailpieces.
There is a contemporary handwritten dedication on the flyleaf in Latin:
‘Hom. Ven. P.M. ten Haat,
Mi chare Pater!
Minorum Frater
Serve Dei
Memento mei.
(… …) N. Angwarda
1781
MAR, IHS, FRS.’ Nico. Angwarda was a physician (chirurgijn) in Dokkum. Possibly the same.
